Breeding Programs

As many of the animals we keep at Fauna Australia Wildlife Retreat have very short natural life spans we aim to successfully breed these animals or work with other people who do.  Through successful captive management many species have had their life spans doubled.  Small species such as Bettongs, Bandicoots and Quolls only live for 3 yrs in the wild.  They are now living for 6-7 yrs in captivity.

In some other species, little is know about what is required for breeding and more needs to be learned.

We currently have successful breeding programs for the following species:

Koala

Rufous Bettong
Brush-tail Bettong
Southern Brown Bandicoot
Northern Brown Bandicoot
Long-nosed Potoroo
Sugar Glider
Squirrel Glider
Grey-headed Flying Fox
Fat-tailed Dunnart
Kangaroo Island Kangaroo
Tammar Wallaby
Red-bellied Pademelon
Red-necked Pademelon
Spinifex Hopping Mouse
Plains Rat
Brush-tailed Possum
Rainbow Lorikeet
Major Mitchell's Cockatoo
Crimson-wing Parrot
Budgerigar
Bush Stone Curlew

Other species we are trying to breed include:

Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat
Common Wombat
Eastern Quoll
Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
Over several years we have been involved with breeding several different species.  Some we no longer keep, as we now concentrate our resources on the more vulnerable species.
