Kangaroos

Macropods "large foot" is the name given to members of the kangaroo family.  Just as there exists large and small species in the cat family (tigers all the way down to domestic cats), the same is true of the kangaroos.  There are 54 species in the kangaroo family, ranging from the well known Kangaroos (some males weighing a muscular 95 kg), to the very small rabbit-sized kangaroos such as bettongs and potoroos.  There is a gradual size reduction from: kangaroos to Wallaroos (also known as Euros) to Wallabies to Pademelons to Bettongs and Potoroos.  Each sub-size has several species as well.

At Fauna Australia Wildlife Retreat, we currently house several members of the Kangaroo Family.  The Kangaroo Island Kangaroo, Common Wallaroo, Swamp Wallaby, Red-necked Wallaby, Tammar Wallaby, Parma Wallaby, Red-necked Pademelon, Tasmanian Pademelon, Rufous Bettong, Brush-tail Bettong and Long-nosed Potoroo.
