Mammals

Australia is home to a vast variety of native mammals and sadly some very successful introduced foreign animals.

Our native mammals take various forms.

The Marsupials, have pouches or skin folds resembling pouches, give birth to tiny young and feed their young on milk.  Examples are Kangaroos, Koalas, Wombats, Quolls and Bandicoots.

The Monotremes, have skin folds resembling pouches, feed their young on milk, but lay eggs.  Examples are the Echidna and Platypus.

The Placental Mammals,  No pouch, generally have longer gestations and also feed their young on milk.  Examples are the Flying Foxes and Spinifex Hopping Mouse.

The introduced mammals are all placental.  These include Humans, Dingoes, Foxes, Cats, Rabbits, Dogs, Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Horses, Donkeys, Camels and  non native rats and mice.
